Mockingjay - Reeking, Carrion, Scavengers and Blanketed

"But others, probably overcome with smoke, escaped the worst of the flames and now lie reeking in various states of decomposition, carrion for scavengers, blanketed by flies".

Reeking-As adjective:
To smoke, steam, or fume.
To be pervaded by something unpleasant.
To give off or become permeated with a strong unpleasant odor.

Carrion
          The decaying flesh of dead animals


Scavengers 
          An animal that feeds on carrion, dead plant material, or refuse

Blanketed - As a verb
          Cover completely with a thick layer of something.



Mockingjay- Belch

"The fires at the coal mines belch black smoke in the distance"

To expel gas noisily from the stomach through the mouth; burp.
To erupt or explode.
To gush forth

Funny, but it does not apply in this context

Catching Fire - Rubbing salt in a wound

Rub salt into/in the wound

Similar to "Echarle sal a la herida". To make a difficult situation even worse for someone. 

Losing was bad enough, having to watch them receiving the trophy just rubbed salt into the wound

Rub:  apply firm pressure to the surface of (something), using a repeated back and forth motion

Wound: an injury to living tissue caused by a cut, blow, or other impact, typically one in which the skin is cut or broken
